What is the Hague Apostille?

The apostille is a certificate that confirms a public document is authentic, so it is accepted in another country party to the Hague Convention without consular legalization.

In Brazil, apostilles have been issued since 2016 by notary offices (cartórios) authorized by the National Council of Justice (CNJ). The electronic apostille has a QR code for verification.

When it is usually required:

  • Citizenship applications in Italy, Portugal or Spain
  • Study, work and residence visas, including residence in Brazil
  • Marriage, divorce and registration of children abroad
  • Diploma recognition and university enrollment

Each document has its own path

Brazilian document to be used abroad

We do the sworn translation and apostille the translation. Documents with a QR code and digital signature stay 100% digital. Older or hand-signed documents require sending the original to the translator.

When the destination also requires an apostille on the original document, we tell you in the quote.

Document issued in the United States

We handle notarization, in person or online, and the apostille in the United States through a local partner. Then, if needed, we do the sworn translation in Brazil.

Document from another country to be used in Brazil

The apostille is issued in the country that issued the document. Once it is apostilled, we do the sworn translation into Portuguese required by bodies such as the Federal Police, notary offices and universities.

Country not party to the Hague Convention? Then the path is consular legalization. Talk to our team.

Questions about the apostille

Do I apostille the original or the translation?

It depends on the country and the authority. In some citizenship processes, such as Italian citizenship, both the original and the translation are commonly apostilled. See when the original needs an apostille.

Does the apostille expire?

The apostille itself does not expire. But the receiving authority may require the document to have been issued recently, such as a recent certificate.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

It depends on the document, the notary office and the destination. Price and turnaround are in the quote, before you hire.

What if the country is not party to the Hague Convention?

In that case, the path is consular legalization. Talk to our team and we'll show you what your document needs.

Not sure whether your document needs an apostille?

Send us a message with the country and the process. We'll reply with the right path.
